2026 Masters Preview: Rory Defends, Scheffler Hunts Third Green Jacket

Published February 2026  |  Augusta National Golf Club  |  April 9–12, 2026

The 2026 Masters Tournament shapes up as one of the most compelling in years. Rory McIlroy arrives as defending champion after his landmark 2025 victory — the green jacket that completed his Career Grand Slam and ended 11 years of heartbreak at Augusta. Meanwhile, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler arrives as a two-time champion (2022, 2024) chasing a third green jacket, while simultaneously hunting the US Open to complete his own Career Grand Slam.

The Masters has rarely had two players with this level of historical stakes entering the same tournament.

The Key Storylines

1. Can Rory Go Back-to-Back?

Only three players in Masters history have won consecutive green jackets: Jack Nicklaus (1965–66), Nick Faldo (1989–90), and Tiger Woods (2001–02). McIlroy, having finally exorcised his Augusta demons, arrives in a completely different mental state than in any previous year. No burden, no pressure of expectation — just the opportunity to make more history.

2. Scheffler's Third Green Jacket Bid

Scheffler won Augusta in 2022 (his first major) and 2024 (wire-to-wire). A third Masters title would put him in the company of Nick Faldo, Phil Mickelson, and Gary Player — and trail only Tiger Woods (5) and Jack Nicklaus (6) on the all-time list. His ball-striking at Augusta is genuinely elite, and his consistency makes him the pre-tournament favorite every year.

3. The Career Grand Slam Race

Both McIlroy (complete) and Scheffler (needs US Open) have Career Grand Slam storylines running through 2026. If Scheffler wins the US Open at Shinnecock Hills in June, he'd become only the 7th player in history to complete the Career Grand Slam. The Masters is the first chapter of that story.
