Did You Know?

  • The Trophy Deposit: Despite winning the 1898 U.S. Open and a $150 prize (a large sum at the time), Herd's reputation as a drinker was so well-known that the USGA refused to let him take the trophy until he paid a deposit — they worried he might pawn it to buy alcohol.
  • Championship Family: Fred's brother Sandy Herd won The Open Championship in 1902, making them one of golf's early championship-winning brother combinations. Three Herd brothers (Fred, Alex, and Davy) actually competed in the 1898 U.S. Open that Fred won.
  • From the Home of Golf: Born in St Andrews, Scotland — the spiritual home of golf — on November 26, 1873, Herd brought Scottish golfing tradition to America when he emigrated at age 24.
