Did You Know?

  • Secret Life-Long Struggle: Archer's widow revealed after his death that he had battled severe learning impairment his entire life. Despite years of effort, he could only read the simplest sentences and could only write his own name. He lived in constant fear of his illiteracy being discovered. In 2008, his widow created the George Archer Memorial Foundation for Literacy to help others with similar struggles.
  • The Towering "Golfing Cowboy": At 6 feet 5½ inches tall, Archer was one of the tallest players in golf history. He earned the nickname "Golfing Cowboy" from a summer job working at sponsor Eugene Selvage's Lucky Hereford Ranch in Gilroy, California.
  • From Basketball Dreams to Golf Greatness: Archer dreamed of playing basketball as a youth, but was kicked off his high school team at San Mateo High for missing too many practices — because of golf. The decision turned out well: he became a Masters champion and one of the game's greatest putters.
